47.5 Lakh Names Deleted From Delhi Voter List, 62,583 Form-6 Applications Filed So Far

Claims and Objections Process Underway; Deadline Set for September 30

Around 47.5 lakh names have been excluded from Delhi’s draft electoral roll, while 62,583 Form-6 applications had been filed during the first 15 days of the claims and objections process, according to figures reported on September 17.

The new draft electoral roll was released on August 31, following the electoral-roll revision exercise. The draft list contains around 97 lakh voters.

The figures show that the number of applications seeking inclusion in the electoral roll so far is substantially lower than the number of names excluded from the draft list. The claims and objections process, however, remains open until September 30, giving affected individuals additional time to seek inclusion.

What Is Form 6?

Form 6 is used by eligible citizens to apply for inclusion of their names in the electoral roll. People who believe their names have been left out can submit the form along with the required documents and seek enrolment.

Election authorities are required to examine such applications and verify the eligibility of applicants before making changes to the electoral roll.

The electoral-roll process also provides mechanisms for citizens to raise objections and seek corrections. CEO Delhi's published guidance states that claims and objections are to be examined by the concerned Electoral Registration Officer (ERO), with verification carried out where required.

Claims Process Continues

With the deadline of September 30 still ahead, the number of Form-6 applications could change as more people check the draft electoral roll and submit claims.

The latest figures therefore represent the position during the first 15 days of the claims and objections period rather than the final outcome of the exercise.

Citizens whose names are missing from the draft roll can check their electoral-roll status and approach the election authorities through the prescribed process for inclusion or correction.

The exercise has drawn attention because of the large number of names excluded from the draft list compared with the number of claims submitted so far. The final electoral roll will depend on the claims, objections and verification carried out before the revision process is completed.
