India Reviews Aviation Security After FlyDubai Incident; Full-Body Scanners Being Deployed
India is reviewing aviation-security measures following the recent developments surrounding the FlyDubai incident, with authorities examining whether any additional security steps are required at Indian airports.
Civil Aviation Ministry Secretary Samir Sinha said the matter was being examined and that recommendations would be made to higher authorities if necessary.
Meanwhile, the government is moving ahead with the installation of full-body scanners at eight airports across the country. According to the Civil Aviation Ministry, some of the airports have already received the equipment, while the installation process is underway at others.
The ministry is also analysing data associated with the scanners as part of efforts to improve their effectiveness and ensure that the technology is adapted to Indian airport-security requirements.
Privacy Safeguards
The ministry has also highlighted privacy protections associated with the technology. Officials said the scanners do not display the identity or a conventional image of the person being screened. Instead, the system generates a generic representation of the body and highlights any object detected as potentially suspicious.
Authorities are also incorporating data on items commonly worn by Indians into the scanners' algorithms. This is intended to help the system distinguish between normal clothing or personal items and objects that may require additional security checks.
The deployment of full-body scanners is part of India's broader effort to strengthen passenger screening while balancing aviation security with privacy consideratio
