West Bengal IPS Officer Transferred Amid Dispute Over Religious Greetings in UPSC Video

IPS Officer Bushra Bano’s Transfer Draws Criticism, Government Calls It Routine Reshuffle

West Bengal IPS officer Bushra Bano, a 2021-batch officer, has been transferred from her position as Additional Superintendent of Police in Kharagpur to the post of Deputy Commandant of the state armed police.

The transfer comes amid controversy surrounding a viral video in which Bano addressed civil services aspirants and spoke about her UPSC preparation journey at a coaching academy associated with Aligarh Muslim University.

In the video, Bano used traditional Islamic greetings while encouraging students preparing for the civil services examination. The clip subsequently triggered a debate on social media and drew criticism from some groups.

A Hindu rights organisation reportedly submitted a complaint to the West Bengal Home Secretary, objecting to Bano's public expressions and alleging that national slogans were absent from the video.

The controversy has since sparked a wider political debate, with critics of the transfer describing the action as discriminatory. Supporters have also questioned whether an officer's use of religious greetings in an educational or motivational video should have any bearing on her administrative posting.

West Bengal government officials, however, have maintained that Bano's reassignment is part of a routine administrative reshuffle and have not officially linked the transfer to the viral video controversy.

The episode has consequently raised broader questions about religious expression, neutrality and the treatment of public servants in official and public-facing roles.
