THE INCIDENT:
An 18-month-old boy died on Friday, July 10, 2026* at a private hospital in Payyannur, Kannur, Kerala after being given anaesthesia to stitch a minor cut on his lip.
The child had remained in critical condition for five days before succumbing. He was being treated at Baby Memorial Hospital, Payyannur.
HOSPITAL'S VERSION:
The hospital has denied allegations of medical negligence. It stated the child suffered an "unexpected cardiac arrest after administration of anaesthesia" and was promptly placed on ventilator support. He was later shifted for advanced critical care. c073
FAMILY'S ALLEGATION:
The child's family has accused a doctor of medical negligence following the death.
ACTION TAKEN:
A case has been booked against the doctor in connection with the incident. Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the child losing consciousness under anaesthesia.
This comes amid growing concerns in Kerala over recent medical incidents involving children.
