Indira Jaising Calls Sexual Harassment ‘Dirty Secret’ of Indian Judiciary
Senior Advocate Indira Jaising has raised serious concerns over sexual harassment within India’s judiciary, alleging that the issue remains largely unspoken despite affecting women judges and legal professionals.
Speaking at the 29th D.S. Borker Memorial Lecture, Jaising recalled her earlier description of sexual harassment as the “dirty secret of the judiciary of India,” saying that “no one wants to talk about it.”
Jaising said she had represented several women judges who allegedly faced harassment from male colleagues. She also recalled the case of a woman judge who, according to her account, faced consequences after refusing a senior judge’s demand that she perform an “item number” at his wedding anniversary celebration.
Highlighting the power imbalance within the judicial system, Jaising said hierarchical structures can make it particularly difficult for women to challenge inappropriate behaviour or report harassment.
Her remarks have renewed debate over workplace safety, institutional accountability and the need for stronger mechanisms to address allegations of sexual harassment within the judiciary.
