Imtiaz Jaleel’s Push for Women & Child Hospital on Gopinath Munde Memorial Land Sees Success.

From Memorial to Maternity: Court-Backed Hospital on Munde Land Nears Completion.

Imtiaz Jaleel’s Decade-Long Fight Bears Fruit: 400-Bed Women’s Hospital Ready Soon.

Land Allotted, Staff Sanctioned: Sambhajinagar’s New Women & Child Hospital Clears Final Hurdle.

The Decade-Long Journey.

What began as a proposal for a 200-bed women and children’s hospital in 2013 has finally materialized as a 400-bed women and neonatal facility at the Government Milk Dairy premises on Jalna Road, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.

The land, measuring 21,853 sq m, was part of a larger plot where the state government had earlier planned a memorial for late Union minister Gopinath Munde. AIMIM MP Imtiaz Jaleel filed a PIL in 2017 before the Aurangabad bench of Bombay High Court, seeking direction to allot land for the hospital. The court intervened, and the collector allotted the plot in 2018 after civil surgeon Dr SV Kulkarni filed an undertaking to build the hospital within two years.

From Memorial to Medical Facility.

Jaleel opposed building statues and memorials, writing to CM Uddhav Thackeray in 2022: “Instead of erecting memorials, it will be a tribute to create facilities for people and name them after these great leaders.” He urged the government to name the hospital after Gopinath Munde, noting the court had ordered a medical facility instead of a memorial.

Of the total 83,344 sq m at the Milk Dairy site, 13,096 sq m was kept for the Munde memorial* and 21,853 sq m for the hospital.

The hospital building is in the final phase of construction. Revised project cost is Rs 174.64 crore. With staff approval, the facility is expected to be operational within four months, said Deputy Director of Health Dr Kanchan Vanere.

Why It Matters for Marathwada.

Currently, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at GMCH Aurangabad is under severe pressure from referrals across Marathwada. The new hospital will strengthen maternity care, high-risk pregnancy management, neonatal ICU, and gynaecological treatment.

Jaleel had earlier pointed out that Aurangabad badly needed another government hospital, especially after shortages felt during the pandemic.

Current Cost Escalation & Prioritization.

The combined 200-bed women & newborn hospital + 200-bed MCH wing saw costs rise from Rs 111 crore to Rs 189.12 crore. To speed up opening, Health Minister Prakash Abitkar has decided to defer works like multi-level parking and oxygen plant worth Rs 30 crore.

After PILs, court orders, and political follow-up by Imtiaz Jaleel, the women and child hospital on the once-disputed Gopinath Munde memorial land is finally ready to serve Marathwada. With 360 staff posts cleared, patient services are set to begin in the next few months.
