At the core of the summit was the concept of Sovereign AI the strategic necessity for India to build its own domestic AI capabilities, including infrastructure, data, and foundational models. For a country as diverse as India, relying on foreign AI models trained on Western data sets often leads to bias and inaccuracy. Mitesh Khapra, Founder of AI4Bharat and Associate Professor at IIT Madras, emphasized this critical gap during the summit. He warned that without sovereignty, India risks losing control over the AI driving critical sectors like healthcare and education. "If we do not have sovereignty, we don’t have control over what goes into training those models," Khapra cautioned, advocating for systems that work equally well for everyone, regardless of their linguistic or demographic background.
The summit highlighted that true sovereignty rests on a "Sovereignty Pyramid" comprising four layers: Chips, Cloud, AI Models, and Knowledge. By controlling these layers, India aims to transition from a digital consumer to a global producer of intelligence.

A recurring theme at the summit was India's evolution from a back-office for global tech to a front-runner in AI innovation. The government’s IndiaAI Mission, with an outlay of over ₹10,300 crore, is the fuel behind this engine.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw made a landmark announcement during the event, revealing plans to expand India’s compute capacity significantly. The mission aims to add thousands of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) to the existing sovereign infrastructure, making high-performance computing accessible to startups and researchers at affordable rates.
This infrastructure push is attracting massive capital. Global investors at the summit signaled confidence in India’s AI trajectory, moving beyond pilot projects to large-scale deployment. The focus is now on "AI Factories" next-generation data centers that will process India’s vast datasets to churn out economic value. Estimates suggest that the AI sector could contribute hundreds of billions to India's GDP by 2030, driven by indigenous foundational models and domain-specific applications in agriculture, logistics, and manufacturing.
The Future of Work: Augmentation Over Replacement

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his address, sought to settle this anxiety. Building Sovereign AI requires massive computational power. While the cloud is essential, Sahil Arora from Qualcomm argued for a "hybrid deployment" model. He noted that for India-scale adoption, AI must run where the user is on the device. "It is all about hybrid architecture between device and cloud," Arora explained. Running smaller, efficient models on smartphones and edge devices reduces latency and data costs, making AI accessible even in areas with poor connectivity. This approach aligns perfectly with India's need for frugal yet scalable innovation.
