BJP Veteran Murli Manohar Joshi’s “Vishwaguru” Comment at Kanpur Event Draws Reactions Across Party Lines.
Kanpur, April 2026: A statement by Bharatiya Janata Party veteran and former Union Minister Murli Manohar Joshi on India’s path to becoming “Vishwaguru” has led to a fresh political debate. Speaking at a public program in Kanpur on April 16, 2026, Joshi spoke about India’s cultural, scientific, and economic progress, saying the country “has the capacity to guide the world” if it stays rooted in knowledge and values.
Parts of his speech were shared widely on social media, with some users praising the message and others criticizing it as “out of touch” with current domestic challenges. Opposition parties, including Congress and Samajwadi Party, responded with statements, while BJP leaders defended Joshi’s remarks as “aspirational and fact-based.”
As of April 18, 2026, no official complaint or privilege notice has been filed over the speech. The discussion remains in the political and media domain.
According to video clips from the event and reports by local media, Joshi was addressing a gathering of teachers, students, and social workers at the Saraswati Shishu Mandir function in Kanpur. His full speech was around 28 minutes. The portion that drew attention came in the last 5 minutes.
“Bharat has always been a land of knowledge. From zero to yoga, from Ayurveda to space missions, we have given to the world. If we keep our focus on education, research, and character, Bharat will again be Vishwaguru. This is not arrogance. This is responsibility.”.
“Vishwaguru does not mean we command others. It means we set an example. When our homes are in order, when our poorest child gets school and medicine, then the world will look to us naturally.”
“Politics today should rise above slogans. We need scientists in labs, teachers in villages, and honest administrators. Only then the word Vishwaguru will have meaning.”
Joshi also mentioned India’s G20 presidency in 2023, Chandrayaan-3, and the growth in digital payments as examples of recent progress. He added that challenges like unemployment and inequality must be addressed “with the same energy.”
Congress UP Congress spokesperson said, “We respect Joshi ji’s scholarship. But before becoming Vishwaguru, government should control prices, give jobs, and fill teacher vacancies in UP.” The party added that India’s UN HDI rank is still 132.
Samajwadi Party SP MLC said in Kanpur, “The BJP remembers Vishwaguru before elections. In villages, people ask for Vishwa-roti, Vishwa-pani, Vishwa-padhai first.” SP demanded a white paper on UP’s education spending.
BJP BJP Kanpur Mahanagar president said Joshi’s words were “misrepresented.” He said, “Joshi ji clearly linked Vishwaguru status to solving poverty and improving schools. Opposition should listen to the full speech.”
Aam Aadmi Party AAP’s UP unit posted that “Vishwaguru status needs world-class government schools,” and cited Delhi model.
CPI Left leaders said the term is used to “divert from unemployment data” and asked for discussion on labor codes instead.
