Calcutta High Court Directs Immediate Arrest Of Bengal Cricketer Abishek Porel In Alleged Rape Case

Kolkata :The Calcutta High Court has directed Bengal and Delhi Capitals cricketer Abishek Porel to be arrested in connection with an alleged rape and criminal intimidation case.
What The Court Ordered:
On July 14, 2026, Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya ordered Bengal Police to immediately arrest Porel and seize his electronic devices to prevent the alleged circulation of intimate photos and videos of the complainant.
The court noted that a pen drive had already been seized, and police needed to recover other devices "so that data stored therein cannot be shared with others". The next hearing is scheduled for August 11, 2026
Allegations In The FIR:
An FIR No. 346/2026 was registered at Mogra Police Station, Hooghly district last month. The complainant, a third-year medical student, alleged that Porel was in a relationship with her for around 3 years and established a physical relationship under the false promise of marriage. She also alleged assault, criminal intimidation, and that intimate moments were recorded without consent*. The charges include non-bailable offences under the *Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Cricketer's Response:
Abishek Porel, 23, has denied all allegations and called them "completely false". He said he was in Bengaluru and had not yet been contacted by police.
Who Is Abishek Porel?
Porel is a left-handed wicketkeeper-batter who plays for Bengal in domestic cricket and has been with Delhi Capitals in the IPL since 2023. He has also represented India A on tours to the UK and Australia.
The investigation is ongoing and Porel is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
