Tukaram Mundhe-Led FDA Team Finds Serious Hygiene Violations at Historic Mumbai Café

Mumbai: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has taken action against the iconic Kyani & Co., one of Mumbai’s historic Irani cafés, following a food-safety inspection that reportedly uncovered serious hygiene violations.
An FDA team led by Maharashtra FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe inspected the café’s food preparation and storage areas. During the inspection, officials reportedly found rodent droppings, live flies and dead cockroaches in areas associated with food handling and storage.
The findings prompted the Maharashtra FDA to suspend the establishment’s FSSAI licence, pending further action and compliance with food-safety requirements.
The action forms part of the FDA’s ongoing inspections aimed at ensuring that restaurants and food establishments maintain prescribed standards of hygiene, sanitation, food storage and preparation.
Kyani & Co., a long-standing name among Mumbai’s Irani cafés, is known for its historic presence and traditional offerings. The FDA action has drawn attention because of the café’s longstanding reputation and popularity among Mumbai residents and visitors.
Officials are expected to assess compliance with food-safety norms before any decision regarding restoration of the licence is taken.
