India May Suffer a Big Loss': Dale Steyn Warns Against Limiting Vaibhav Suryavanshi to T20s.
South African legend says young batsman has rare talent, urges BCCI to protect him for Test cricket; fears franchise focus could cost India a great red-ball player.
Mumbai, June 13, 2026:South African pace legend Dale Steyn has issued a strong warning about India’s teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi, saying the country risks losing a potential Test great if the youngster gets restricted to T20 franchise cricket.
‘Rare Talent in World Cricket’
Speaking to reporters, Steyn praised Suryavanshi’s technique and temperament, calling it a level of talent “rarely seen in the world of cricket.” The 17-year-old has been making headlines with explosive performances in domestic T20 leagues and for India U-19.
Don’t Limit Him to T20s, Says Steyn.
Steyn said India will have to make sure that Vaibhav is not limited to T20 cricket. He warned that if the young player’s full attention went on franchise cricket, Indian cricket could lose a brilliant Test batsman.
Prioritize Red-Ball Cricket.
The former Proteas quick advised Suryavanshi to prioritize Test cricket, saying the longest format would best develop his game and serve India long-term. Steyn added that franchise money and quick fame can derail young players unless boards manage workloads and exposure carefully.
Steyn’s comments come amid growing debate over workload management for India’s next-gen batters, with several young players opting for year-round T20 leagues over domestic first-class cricket.
