Rohit Sharma’s 2027 World Cup Remark Reignites Retirement Debate

Speculation over Rohit Sharma’s international retirement has resurfaced after the veteran India batter made a fresh comment about his chances of playing in the 2027 ODI World Cup.

When asked about the next World Cup, Rohit reportedly said that “October 2027 is far away”, suggesting that he is not looking to make a definitive decision about the tournament this early. His response has nevertheless added to the suspense surrounding his ODI future.

Rohit, who has already retired from T20I and Test cricket, continues to play ODIs. His recent performances have also strengthened the argument that he remains capable of contributing at the highest level. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia recently backed Rohit, saying the veteran is playing superbly and that there is no need to fuel speculation about his future.

The 2027 ODI World Cup is scheduled to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Rohit has previously made clear that winning the 2027 World Cup remains an important ambition, but his latest “far away” remark leaves his eventual participation open.
