THE REPORT.

NEW DELHI: :Congress MP and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi sparked a fresh political storm in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday after quoting a student's remark that called an  "Andhbhakt" an "idiot pretending he is God."

The comment led to a heated exchange with the Treasury benches during a debate on student issues and exam irregularities.

What Rahul Gandhi Said:

During his speech, Gandhi said he was narrating a conversation he had with a student. He quoted the student as saying:

"An Andhbhakt is an idiot pretending he is God.".

Gandhi defended himself immediately, stating he was *merely repeating the views expressed by the student*, and not his own words.

Govt Hits Back:

Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju objected strongly to the remark, calling it "unparliamentary" and asking the Chair to expunge it from records.Rijiju said using such language in the House lowers the dignity of Parliament and amounts to insulting a section of citizens. BJP MPs also raised slogans demanding an apology from the Congress leader.

The Bigger Picture:

The face-off took place during the discussion on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026* and ongoing protests over the NEET paper leak. Opposition members have been targeting the Centre over student anger, while the government has accused the Opposition of politicizing the issue. The Chair noted the objections and said the matter would be examined as per parliamentary rules.
