Ujjain Shahi Masjid Row: Crowd Clashes With Police Over Road-Widening Demolition Plan

Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh | September 28, 2026: Tensions escalated in Ujjain on Monday as a large crowd confronted police during protests over the proposed removal of a portion of the historic Shahi Masjid as part of a road-widening project.

The confrontation occurred as authorities moved ahead with removing the section of the mosque that falls within the proposed road alignment. Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd after stones were reportedly thrown at security personnel. Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel were also deployed in the area. 

Road Widening Linked to Simhastha 2028

The road-widening work is part of preparations for the Simhastha Mela 2028, when Ujjain is expected to receive a large influx of pilgrims. Reports say 272 structures have been identified for removal or modification as part of the broader infrastructure project. 

The dispute centres on the stretch between Kanthal Chauraha and Gopal Mandir, where the road is being widened. Residents and members of the Muslim community have opposed the removal of the mosque portion and have sought an alternative alignment. 

Heavy Police Deployment

Security was intensified around the mosque following an overnight gathering by residents and community members who opposed the proposed demolition. Reports put the police deployment at around 2,000–2,500 personnel, with barricades and restrictions imposed around the area. 

According to reports, discussions between the administration and community representatives had taken place overnight, with an arrangement reportedly reached for the affected portion to be removed by members associated with the mosque rather than directly by municipal machinery. The situation nevertheless became tense again on Monday morning. 

Court Proceedings

The mosque-related road-widening dispute has also been contested legally. The Madhya Pradesh High Court's Indore Bench had earlier dismissed petitions challenging the municipal action, while the mosque committee subsequently approached a Division Bench. A hearing was scheduled amid the continuing dispute. 

As of Monday, authorities remained deployed around the site to prevent further escalation, while the road-widening project continued amid protests and heightened security
