According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the quake struck at 4:27 pm local time (0727 GMT) off the island of Kyushu. It registered the highest possible level 7 on Japan's Shindo intensity scale.A tsunami warning was issued immediately after the tremor and coastal areas were urged to evacuate to higher ground.

Damage & Casualties:

Kumamoto prefecture was hit hardest. A partially collapsed shopping mall left multiple people trapped and others presumed dead inside, rescue teams said.Roads and buildings sustained heavy damage across southwestern Kyushu.
