"'Can Om Birla At Least Pretend To Be Impartial': Rana Ayyub Slams Lok Sabha Speaker Amid Parliament Row".

THE REPORT.

NEW DELHI :Journalist Rana Ayyub has criticised Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla questioning his impartiality amid escalating political tensions in Parliament.

In a post on X, Ayyub wrote:

“Can Om Birla at least pretend to be impartial”

The comment came as Opposition partiescontinued to accuse the Speaker of *favouring the government* during heated proceedings in the Lok Sabha.

Context: Parliament In Turmoil:

The remarks follow days of repeated disruptions and sharp exchanges between the treasury and opposition benches during the Monsoon Session.Key flashpoints include the debate on the Anti-Paper Leak Bill, police action against student protesters, and objections over unparliamentary language. Opposition MPs have alleged that the Speaker is not allowing adequate time for debate and is shutting down dissenting voices. The Congress, TMC, and other INDIA bloc parties have repeatedly raised the issue of the Speaker’s conduct, claiming the Chair is acting in a partisan manner.

Speaker's Role Under Scrutiny:

Om Birla, who is serving his second term as Speaker, has maintained that he is following parliamentary rules and giving everyone a chance to speak. The government has backed him, calling Opposition protests a tactic to avoid discussion on key bills.Ayyub’s post adds to the growing public debate over the neutrality of the Speaker’s office, one of the most crucial constitutional posts in parliamentary democracy.
