History In Wellington: India Smashes World Record For Fastest Team 100 In T20I Cricket

WELLINGTON: India created history in the 3rd T20I against New Zealand in Wellington, breaking the world record for the fastest team 100 in T20I cricket on Tuesday.

Chasing 199 at the Sky Stadium (Westpac Trust Stadium), openers Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi turned the contest into a one-sided exhibition. The duo raced to 50 in just 2.2 overs (14 balls) the joint-fastest team fifty in men’s T20Is alongside PNG and Romania and then to 100 in exactly 5.0 overs, shattering the previous record.

The previous fastest was Romania’s 100 in 5.2 overs vs Serbia in Sofia in 2021. South Africa’s 5.3 overs vs West Indies in Centurion 2023 was the previous benchmark among Full Member teams.

Tumbling Records Day:. Fastest Team 100:* 5.0 overs — IND vs NZ, Wellington 2026. Previous 5.2 overs — Romania vs Serbia.

Highest Powerplay Score:* India raced to 118/0 in the opening six overs, marking the highest Powerplay total ever recorded in men's T20 International history, beating Romania’s 116/0.

Fastest 150:* India reached 150 in 7.4 overs — the fastest by any team in men’s T20 cricket.

Abhishek’s Carnage:

World’s No.1 ranked T20 batter Abhishek Sharma scythed through a hapless New Zealand attack, smashing an incredible 113 off 38 balls, including a 15-ball fifty the second-fastest fifty by an Indian after Yuvraj Singh’s 12-ball fifty in 2007 and a 35-ball hundred. He hit 11 sixes and 9 boundaries and celebrated with his famous meditation pose.

15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was no less ruthless, scoring 45 off 18 balls (19 balls overall) with 4 sixes, giving blistering support. The opening stand was 133 in just 7.1 overs.

The match was killed in the first over itself, bowled by Jacob Duffy which yielded 26 runs. India reached the 199 target in a ridiculous 13.2 overs to win by six wickets and clinch the series, completing a hat-trick of T20I series wins on New Zealand soil.

Score Brief:NZ 198/3 (Daryl Mitchell 89*, Finn Allen 40) lost to IND 199/4 in 13.2 overs (Abhishek 113, Sooryavanshi 45). 61fb49c7
