India Steps Into Global 6G Race With US-Led Initiative
India has taken a significant step into the global race for next-generation telecommunications by joining a US-led international initiative focused on developing secure and advanced 6G networks.
The US Department of Commerce announced that India has joined the United States and 24 other countries in the initiative, bringing the total number of participating nations to 26. The partnership aims to coordinate national approaches to 6G and help shape the technologies, standards and security principles that will underpin future wireless networks.
The move strengthens growing India-US cooperation in emerging technologies and gives India a platform to contribute to the global development of 6G standards. The initiative is expected to focus on secure, interoperable and reliable next-generation networks, with 6G widely expected to begin succeeding 5G during the 2030s.
India has already been building its domestic 6G ecosystem through the Bharat 6G Alliance, which brings together telecom companies, equipment manufacturers, startups, research institutions and academia. The government has said India aims to become a front-line contributor to the design, development and deployment of 6G technology by 2030.
India is also investing in advanced 6G research, including a planned terahertz testbed involving research institutions such as IIT Madras, IIT Guwahati and IIT Patna. Indian stakeholders are participating in international standardisation efforts through bodies including the ITU and 3GPP.
The latest US-led initiative therefore represents more than a telecommunications partnership. It could give India an opportunity to influence the global rules and standards governing one of the most important technologies of the coming decade.
With countries competing to establish leadership in 6G, India's participation signals its ambition to move beyond being a major technology market and become a contributor to the technologies and standards shaping the future of global connectivity.
