Democratic Senator Chris Murphy Calls Trump’s Renewed Iran Attack Plan ‘Insane’ After Classified Briefing Warns Of Prolonged War, No Objectives Met

WASHINGTON:Democratic Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) has warned that the US military plans for renewed strikes on Iran, shown to him in a classified briefing, would fail to achieve objectives and trigger a prolonged conflict and devastating escalation.

Quoted by Iran International and Sunday Guardian Live on Oct 29, Murphy said: “Their plan is insane,”adding he could not disclose details due to classification.

What Murphy Said:

Plan would not increase leverage, would escalate war, break international law, and strengthen hardliners in Iran less willing to negotiate.

Bombing campaign has not reopened Strait of Hormuz; reopening needs diplomatic agreement, not continued military threat.

“There is no evidence that continued military action or threat of military action is increasing our leverage.”

Military leaders in briefing gave no sign of what they privately think about plan.

Broader Criticism:

Murphy and Sen. Elizabeth Warren say war nearing 8-month mark (started late Feb 2026 under Trump administration with Israel) has cost $45-47 billion, 23 US service members killed. “Nobody can seem to explain what it accomplished or when it will end.”

Oct 22 post on X: “Trump has now committed to massive escalation which would include ground troops and billions of taxpayer money to prop up a new regime. 70% would move to 99% oppose.”

On Oct 6 trip to Qatar and Saudi Arabia, Pentagon barred him from Al Udeid Air Base largest US base in Middle East, repeatedly hit by Iranian missiles. Murphy said order from Defense Sec. Pete Hegseth, applying to both parties, to hide war costs: “An active, unprecedented, unconstitutional effort to hide costs and implications from Congress and Americans.”

Pentagon official said travel restriction consistent with March 3, 2026 directive.

Diplomacy:

Murphy in Riyadh: US should focus on deal with Iran  “possible” instead of resumption of strikes. Met Qatar diplomat Ali Al Thawadi, key coordinator of US-Iran shuttle diplomacy.

Iran’s Tasnim confirms receipt of letter from VP JD Vance to Secretary of Supreme National Security Council; Iran yet to respond. Reportedly 7 conditions set by US.

Democratic Plan:

After midterms (House expected to flip per polls, Senate coin toss), Murphy expects if Democrats hold power, they would fund Defense but attach provision barring money for Iran war and replenishing missile stocks used in it.
