"Speed And Hope: Vande Bharat Used For Urgent Heart Transplant Transit In Gujarat"
"Indian Railways Creates Green Corridor: Vande Bharat Delivers Donor Heart From Surat To Ahmedabad".
THE REPORT.
AHMEDABAD :In a first for Indian Railways, a Vande Bharat Express was used to transport a donor heart from Surat to Ahmedabad to save a patient's life, creating a "green corridor" for the urgent medical mission.
How It Happened:
Railways coordinated with medical teams and local authorities to ensure the organ reached the hospital in Ahmedabad within the critical time window. The highspeed Mumbai Central Gandhinagar Capital Vande Bharat Express operates on the Surat Ahmedabad route, with travel time between Surat and Ahmedabad of around 1 hour 15 minutes.Officials prioritized the train’s movement and station halts to minimize delays, allowing doctors to receive the heart in time for transplant surgery.
Why Vande Bharat:
The Vande Bharat Express is known for its speed and punctuality. On this section, the train runs at up to *130 km/hr with an average speed of around 106 km/hr between Ahmedabad and Surat. Using the semi-high speed train helped cut transit time significantly compared to road transport.
Significance:
This is being hailed as the first instance of a live heart being transported via Vande Bharat. Railways said such coordination shows how high-speed trains can be used not just for passengers, but also for life-saving medical emergencies. The Surat-Ahmedabad stretch is one of the busiest Vande Bharat routes in Gujarat. Indian Railways has over 160 Vande Bharat trains running across the country as of January 2026.
