Pakistan Says No Military Response Under Mecca Pact ‘For Now’ After Houthi Attacks on Saudi Arabia

Pakistan has clarified that no military response is currently being discussed under its recently signed Mecca defence agreement with Saudi Arabia and Turkey following intensified Houthi attacks on Saudi territory.

Pakistan Foreign Ministry spokesperson Sajjad Haider Khan said Islamabad remains committed to the agreement but would act under its provisions “when the time comes.” 

The clarification comes after Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif had warned that continued Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia could potentially trigger the defence pact. The agreement provides for collective defence, with an armed attack on one member treated as an attack on all. 

Rising Tensions in the Region

The Houthis, aligned with Iran, have recently intensified missile and drone attacks against Saudi cities and energy infrastructure. Saudi Arabia has responded with airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen, raising fears that the conflict could widen. 

For now, Islamabad appears to be maintaining a cautious position, condemning the attacks while avoiding any immediate military commitment
