8 Dead, Several Injured After Molten Steel Spills at Visakhapatnam Steel Plant.

Visakhapatnam, June 8, 2026 – A major industrial accident at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd) killed at least 8 workers and left several others injured Monday after molten steel spilled during a lifting operation. 

What Happened.

The accident occurred at the Steel Melting Shop (SMS)-2 and STC-3 facility. A large quantity of molten steel at ∼1,600°C reportedly spilled while being moved in a bucket by a crane. Workers in the area were caught in the path of the superheated metal, causing multiple casualties and severe burn injuries. 

Casualties & Response.

At least 8 workers killed; 5 bodies recovered so far Several others injured, many critically with burns. Officials fear the toll could rise Emergency teams rushed to the site; injured shifted to nearby hospitals

Police Commissioner Shankabrata Baghchi said 5 people were severely injured as per preliminary report 

Official Reaction

Andhra Pradesh CM N Chandrababu Naidu expressed “deep anguish” and directed all departments to coordinate help. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine if mechanical failure or operational lapse caused the spill. 

Early reports varied PTI first reported 5 killed, while Moneycontrol/News18 reported 8 dead. Rescue operations are ongoing. 

This is the latest in a series of accidents at Vizag Steel Plant, which has seen fatal blasts and gas leaks in past years
