CHANDIGARH:Police used water cannons to disperse leaders and workers of Akali Dal Waris Punjab De during a protest in Chandigarh on Tuesday The demonstrators were demanding the immediate release of the party's MP Amritpal Singh and other Sikh leaders.

What Happened:

Hundreds of party workers gathered near the Punjab and Haryana Secretariat to stage a sit-in. They marched towards the barricades shouting slogans seeking Amritpal Singh’s release.To prevent them from breaching security, *Chandigarh Police deployed water cannons* and used mild force to break up the gathering. No major injuries were reported, but several protestors were detained and later released.

The Demand:

Akali Dal Waris Punjab De leaders said Amritpal Singh, the Khadoor Sahib MP, and other Sikh activists have been detained under stringent laws following recent protests and speeches.Party leaders alleged that the Centre and Punjab government were targeting Sikh voices and demanded their unconditional release."This is an attack on democratic rights. Our MP and other leaders are being kept in illegal detention. We will not stop until they are freed,"a senior party leader said at the protest site.

Security Tightened:

In view of the protest, security was heightened around key government buildings in Chandigarh. Police said the action was taken to maintain law and order and prevent any disruption.The Amritpal Singh case has remained a flashpoint in Punjab politics, with repeated protests and counter-protests over the past year.
