Mumbai: A discussion over the cost of passenger amenities at Mumbai’s historic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) has gained attention after a traveller highlighted the charges for sleeping pods at the railway station.

According to the traveller’s account, passengers using the sleeping pods at CSMT are charged ₹200 for one hour, while a 12-hour stay costs ₹850 and a 24-hour stay costs ₹1,700. The pricing has prompted questions about how accessible such facilities are for passengers travelling on limited budgets.

The traveller also raised concerns about the availability and capacity of conventional waiting areas at the station, arguing that a large railway station such as CSMT should have more affordable and comfortable waiting facilities for passengers who simply need a place to sit while waiting for their trains.

The issue is not necessarily about removing sleeping pods from railway stations. Such facilities can be useful for passengers who need privacy or a place to rest for several hours. However, the argument is that they should exist alongside low-cost, clean and comfortable waiting halls, rather than becoming the only convenient option available to passengers.

The traveller suggested that an affordable air-conditioned waiting hall, potentially costing around ₹10–₹20 per hour, could serve a much larger section of the travelling public. Such a facility would allow passengers to sit comfortably without having to pay the comparatively higher charges associated with sleeping pods.

CSMT is one of Mumbai’s most important railway terminals and handles a large number of passengers every day. The debate therefore highlights a broader question about railway-station amenities: should premium facilities be complemented by affordable options for ordinary passengers?
