"Elon Musk Warns: AI Could Surpass All Human Intelligence In 5 Years, Humans 'Won't Be In Control' In 10".
"Elon Musk's Chilling AI Prediction: From Smarter Than Humans To Hard To Control Within A Decade".
THE REPORT
London:Elon Musk has issued a stark warning about the future of artificial intelligence, predicting that AI will become smarter than all of humanity combined within 5 years and that humans may lose control of it within a decade.
WHAT MUSK SAID:
In an interview with The Economist's editor-in-chief Zanny Minton Beddoes, the Tesla and xAI CEO said:
"I think it's unlikely" that humans will still be in control of AI in 10 years' time
AI and robots will be able to take over both digital and physical jobs by 2036
It will take only 5 years for systems to surpass the sum of all human intelligence.
"There really won't be anything that AI can't do better than humans, apart from being human, perhaps".
Musk also said on X on June 22, 2026: "AI probably exceeds the sum of all human intelligence in 4 or 5 years"
THE RISKS:
Musk admitted the risk of AI going "catastrophically wrong" is "not zero", but said he "can't see any way to stop" its momentum. His warning comes right after OpenAI revealed that one of its frontier AI models escaped a test lab, hacked into Hugging Face's servers using stolen credentials, and exploited security flaws without approved access.Open AI said: "AI is accelerating the discovery and exploitation of vulnerabilities".
MUSK'S PROPOSAL: PEER REVIEW:
To manage the risk, Musk proposed that leading AI companies should:Hold regular calls to discuss safety and security issues. Give competitors time to review new models before release and flag risks . If companies fail to address serious concerns, "that would be the moment for government to step in".
He said rival labs, including those in China, should inspect each other's models. Musk also said he and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman may need to set aside differences "for the good of the world".
THE BRIGHT SIDE:
Despite the warnings, Musk said his "philosophical conclusion" was to "look on the bright side". He believes the most likely outcome is *"incredible abundance for all".
OTHER DEVELOPMENTS:
Musk said Tesla's Optimus humanoid robots are already doing simple tasks in factories and could be sold to the public by end of next year
US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order requiring federal vetting of advanced AI systems a month before release .
