Iran Capital Strengthens Civil Defence as Metro Stations Set for Shelter Use
Tehran to Prepare Metro Stations as Emergency Shelters Amid Rising Security Tensions
Tehran, September 8, 2026: Tehran authorities are preparing metro stations to serve as emergency shelters, according to Tehran City Council Chairman Mehdi Chamran.
Chamran said essential facilities and utilities would be installed inside or near designated metro stations, although authorities have not announced a timeline for completing the preparations.
Special signs will also be installed to identify the stations designated as shelters. Chamran urged residents to familiarize themselves with the locations beforehand rather than waiting for a crisis or emergency to begin searching for shelter.
The move comes amid heightened regional security tensions and follows earlier discussions in Iran about using underground metro infrastructure to protect civilians during emergencies. Other reports say Tehran authorities had previously designated dozens of metro stations for emergency shelter use.
