NEW DELHI:The Supreme Court has cleared former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in the CoalGate case, ruling there was no evidence to implicate him in alleged irregularities in coal block allocations.The verdict has triggered strong reactions across the political spectrum, with Congress MP Shashi Tharoor posting:
"Irony just died again. The cleanest man in Indian politics did not need an SC certificate of his integrity. Instead it is those who sought to implicate him in these charges who ought to be thoroughly ashamed of themselves."
What The Court Said:
The Supreme Court, while hearing matters related to the Coal block allocation scam, found no criminal culpability against Dr. Manmohan Singh. The court observed that as Prime Minister he had acted within the policy framework of the time and there was no material to show personal wrongdoing.The case dates back to allegations of irregularities in allocation of coal blocks between 2004-2009, during which Dr. Singh also held the Coal portfolio.
Political Reaction:
Tharoor's post went viral, with Congress leaders calling it vindication of Singh's reputation for personal integrity.They argued that despite a decade of allegations and probes, no court found Dr. Singh guilty.
BJP leaders, who had raised the CoalGate issue during UPA-II, have not commented yet on the SC order.
Dr. Manmohan Singh, PM from 2004-2014, was often described even by political opponents as a man of impeccable personal honesty, though his government faced several corruption charges.
