West Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has issued a strong warning over slogans allegedly calling for “freedom for Kashmir” at Jadavpur University, saying such activities would invite a response in the language of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose rather than Mahatma Gandhi.
Speaking in the West Bengal Assembly, Adhikari said Jadavpur University would receive a grant of ₹1,300 crore, but warned that those advocating the “breaking up” of India would face strict action.
Adhikari’s remarks have reignited the debate over nationalism, free speech and political activism on university campuses. Jadavpur University has historically been associated with left-wing politics and has remained an important centre of student activism in West Bengal, even as the electoral influence of the Left has declined in the state.
The statement is likely to intensify the political debate surrounding the university, particularly over the limits of campus dissent and slogans considered contrary to India’s territorial integrity.
