Philippines Ferry Fire: 5 Dead, 86–87 Missing After MV June Aster Blaze

A major maritime tragedy unfolded off the coast of Palawan in the Philippines after the passenger ferry MV June Aster caught fire while travelling from Manila to Coron on Wednesday evening.

The Philippine Coast Guard said at least five people have died, while the number of missing people has been reported at 86–87 as rescue authorities continue reconciling passenger records. The ferry was carrying 134 people — 117 passengers and 17 crew members. At least 43 people have been rescued so far. 

Fire Breaks Out Near Coron

The blaze erupted at around 6:45 p.m. as the vessel approached Coron. Survivors reportedly heard a loud explosion from the cargo hold before the fire spread rapidly through the ferry. Some passengers were forced to jump into the sea, with reports that some were not wearing life jackets. 

The ferry remained afloat but was badly damaged and continued to emit smoke. Extreme heat and the risk of further explosions initially made it difficult for rescuers to board the vessel.

Massive Search-and-Rescue Operation

The Philippine Coast Guard, military, local fishermen and private boat operators have joined the search for survivors. Rough seas and strong currents have complicated rescue operations, while authorities have also urged nearby vessels and coastal communities to watch for people who may have drifted away from the ferry

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Authorities have not ruled out any possibility and are examining the vessel, its cargo and safety procedures.
