Reports of a secret Russian programme to help Iran develop advanced supersonic cruise-missile technology have raised fresh concerns about the military balance in the Middle East.
A recent Financial Times investigation, based on leaked Russian correspondence, travel records and military-patent analysis, reported that the programme codenamed C430L began in 2023 and involved Russian missile specialists working with Iran. The reported focus was ramjet propulsion, a technology that can enable sustained flight at several times the speed of sound.
According to the investigation, the technology could potentially support the development of advanced anti-ship and land-attack cruise missiles. Such capabilities could significantly increase Iran's ability to threaten naval forces and strategic targets in the Gulf region.
