Uniform Civil Code to Be Rolled Out in NDA-Ruled States Before 2029: Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be implemented in all states governed by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
Shah’s statement signals a renewed push by the BJP-led alliance to establish a common framework of personal laws covering matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption across different communities.
The UCC remains a major political and legal issue in India. Supporters argue that a common civil code would promote equality and uniformity in personal laws, while critics have raised concerns about its potential impact on religious and cultural practices.
The implementation of the UCC is primarily a matter for individual states unless Parliament legislates on areas within its constitutional competence. Uttarakhand became the first state to implement a comprehensive UCC in 2025.
Shah’s latest remarks indicate that the UCC is likely to remain a significant part of the NDA’s political agenda in the run-up to the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
