After Madan Mitra, TMC MP Rukmini 'Koel' Mallick Quits Rajya Sabha Amid Rebel Turmoil".

Kolkata - The crisis in Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress deepened on Thursday with actress-turned-politician Rukmini 'Koel' Mallick resigning from the Rajya Sabha.

WHAT HAPPENED:

Koel Mallick met Vice President CP Radhakrishnan and submitted her resignation letter, seeking "immediate effect" She took oath as Rajya Sabha MP only on April 6, 2026, just 3 months ag .She has not disclosed the reason for her resignation .

BACKDROP: TMC IN TURMOIL:

Mallick's exit comes just a day after Mamata's close aide Madan Mitra quit TMC and joined the rebel faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee. 

Mitra blamed Abhishek Banerjee for the party's crisis, saying "The party is sinking; the boat has gone under". Mamata defended Abhishek, claiming Mitra left due to ED summons to his family.

MAMATA'S RESPONSE:

Addressing leaders, Mamata said: "Those who are under pressure... take whatever decision you want and go wherever you want before July 21" .

She also took over as TMC West Bengal state president* herself after Chandrima Bhattacharya resigned. 

WHY THE REBELLION?

The revolt is largely seen as being against Abhishek Banerjee's growing authority in the party, not Mamata herself. Rebels continue to call Mamata their "supreme leader". 

The TMC suffered a crushing defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, winning just 80 out of 294 seats.
