Canada Backs US-Led Efforts to Reopen Strait of Hormuz, Vows More Pressure on Iran
OTTAWA, September 7, 2026: Canada has backed efforts led by the United States, France and Britain to reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz and signalled that it could take further measures against Iran.
In a joint statement, Foreign Minister Anita Anand and Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne condemned what they described as Iran’s destabilising activities in the Middle East and called on Tehran to immediately end them.
The ministers accused Iran of threatening vessels attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, pursuing illicit nuclear activities and supporting armed groups across the region. They said Iran’s actions were continuing to undermine global peace and security.
Canada also said it was working closely with its allies, including members of the G7, to maintain economic and diplomatic pressure on Tehran.
Ottawa further expressed support for sanctions announced under the US-led Operation Economic Outcast, adding another layer of pressure on Iran as international tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz remain high.
