GOVERNOR ADVISES WOMEN GRADUATES TO PRIORITIZE HOME SKILLS ALONG WITH CAREERS:

At a university convocation in Uttar Pradesh, Governor Anandiben Patel former Chief Minister of Gujarat and senior BJP leader  told women graduates to become “expert mothers” and know how to cook before pursuing careers as IAS officers or teachers.

The comment was made while addressing women students on the occasion of their graduation.

 CRITICISM: "PATRIARCHY NORMALIZED IN NAME OF ADVICE":

The remark drew immediate backlash online. Critics said it reflects how women’s careers are celebrated, but they’re still reminded that their primary role is at home.

Many asked: "Would the same advice be given to a hall full of male graduates?"

Supporters and some BJP leaders defended the Governor’s intent, saying:  

"Holistic development": The advice was meant to encourage women to balance professional ambitions with family responsibilities, not to limit careers.

"Cultural values": Leaders argued that in Indian society, cooking and homemaking are considered important life skills for both men and women, and the Governor was emphasizing self-reliance.

"Personal experience": As a woman who rose from a teacher to CM and Governor, Patel often speaks about discipline, hard work, and managing both home and career.

BJP sources said the statement should not be seen as discouraging women from joining civil services, but as advice to "be prepared for all roles in life."
