Delhi Police Use Tear Gas, Lathi-Charge as CJP Protesters Breach Barricades Near Parliament".

New Delhi :| High drama unfolded in the heart of the capital on Monday as thousands of protesters gathered at Jantar Mantar and attempted to march towards Parliament House on the opening day of the Monsoon Session.

The protest was led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) in support of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on a hunger strike for 23 days demanding accountability over paper leaks and education reforms.

What Happened:

According to eyewitness accounts and TV visuals, protesters breached police barricades at Jantar Mantar and tried to move towards the Parliament Street Police Station area. 

Delhi Police responded by using batons and deploying tear gas guns at the protest site. CJP claimed that several demonstrators sustained injuries, including skull fractures, during the police action. 

Delhi Police, however, denied the use of excessive force and said the "protest is being handled professionally". DCP New Delhi Sachin Sharma said police exercised "maximum restraint" while clearing the site. 

A heavy deployment of Delhi Police and Rapid Action Force personnel was seen, with three-tier security and multi-layer barricading set up around Jantar Mantar and Parliament Street. 

Background: Why The Protest?

The CJP has been protesting at Jantar Mantar since June 20, demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged NEET paper leaks.

Tensions escalated after police shifted Sonam Wangchuk to Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday, citing a Delhi High Court order and deteriorating health. CJP called the march a "Chalo Sansad" movement and termed it India’s “second freedom movement”. 

Wangchuk has set 3 conditions to end his fast: government accountability for paper leaks, allowing a CJP delegation to meet MPs in Parliament, or MPs visiting him in hospital. 

Delhi Police clarified that no permission was granted for the march to Parliament. Officials said allowing a large crowd near Parliament could lead to a law and order situation in the high-security Lutyens' Delhi area. 

CJP, on the other hand, alleged that 30-40 "goons" from BJP and Delhi Police had infiltrated the protest site to create mischief and posted photos of security personnel with tear gas guns. 

Political Reactions:

Opposition leaders condemned the police action. AAP and other parties called it an "assault on democracy". CJP representatives said they have been approached by the government for talks and are set to meet Union Minister JP Nadda. 

Traffic in central Delhi, including Parliament Street, Ashoka Road, and Connaught Place, was affected due to the protest and security arrangements.
