Former AAP National Spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar Joins Congress, Says ‘No Need to Let Votes Scatter’

New Delhi: Former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national chief spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar joined the Congress on Saturday, October 3, ending her more than decade-long association with the Arvind Kejriwal-led party.

Kakkar joined the Congress at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) office in New Delhi alongside former Uttar Pradesh MLA Shyam Sundar Sharma and journalist Rajat Rakesh Tandon.

Explaining her decision, Kakkar said there was “no need to let votes scatter” and said she wanted to work against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and oppose what she described as the “regressive politics” of the BJP.

Kakkar also criticised the AAP over what she described as a departure from its earlier promises. She said she could no longer defend what she called the party’s “indefensible” actions, referring, among other things, to the use of helicopters for private travel.

She further expressed support for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s campaign concerning alleged irregularities in electoral rolls and his criticism of the Election Commission.

Kakkar had been associated with the AAP for more than a decade and served in several organisational roles before becoming its national chief spokesperson. Her move to Congress comes amid heightened political activity over the Election Commission and demands for Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.

The development follows protests in Delhi on October 2, when hundreds of people, including AAP and student-group members, were detained while attempting to demonstrate at Jantar Mantar over the issue.

The Congress has presented Kakkar’s induction as part of its broader political mobilisation, while her departure marks a change in affiliation for a prominent former AAP spokesperson.
