Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has stepped up her criticism of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Speaking in Wayanad on September 24, Priyanka alleged that tampering with voter rolls and large-scale deletion of voters’ names would amount to a criminal act against democracy and the Constitution. She said that if the CEC was found responsible for illegal actions, he should face criminal prosecution. 

Priyanka also questioned the legal protection available to the Chief Election Commissioner and alleged that Kumar had been made aware of concerns raised by fellow Election Commissioners but had allowed the process to continue.

Her remarks came amid a political row over SIR and reports that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections on multiple occasions regarding decisions linked to the electoral-roll revision. 

The Election Commission, however, has maintained that its decisions, including those related to SIR, were taken unanimously by the three-member Commission and that internal observations and deliberations are part of its normal institutional process.
