Zimbabwe Tycoon Wicknell Chivayo, Wife Among Six Killed in Helicopter Crash
Prominent Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy “Lulu” Muteke, were among six people killed when a helicopter crashed in the Marondera area, east of Harare, on Wednesday evening. Chivayo’s family confirmed the couple’s deaths.
Zimbabwean authorities said the helicopter crashed at around 5 p.m. local time in a rural area near Waddilove Mission. Police and government officials reported that there were no survivors. The aircraft reportedly carried two pilots and four other occupants, although officials were still working to formally identify all the victims.
Chivayo, who was in his 40s, was one of Zimbabwe’s best-known businessmen and was widely recognised for his lavish lifestyle and high-profile social-media presence. He became particularly known for giving away expensive cars and other luxury gifts to celebrities, religious figures and members of the public.
He also had prominent political and business connections in Zimbabwe. His business activities included major energy and infrastructure projects, while his public profile frequently featured interactions with senior African political leaders.
The cause of the helicopter crash has not yet been established. Investigations are underway, and authorities are expected to provide further details after the identification of the victims and examination of the crash site.
