“Fun Is Over, Abba!” — Rafi’s Son Recalls His Memorable Meeting With Boxing Great Muhammad Ali

Two icons from entirely different worlds—Indian playback singer Mohammad Rafi and American boxing legend Muhammad Ali—once shared a memorable encounter in the United States.

The meeting took place during one of Rafi’s concert tours across America. While travelling between cities for performances, Rafi’s concert organiser told him that he personally knew Muhammad Ali.

Rafi was delighted to hear this and expressed his wish to meet the legendary boxer at least once. The organiser subsequently contacted Ali and told him about Rafi’s desire to meet him. Ali, who was familiar with the Indian singer and his reputation, agreed to the meeting despite his busy schedule.

A Meeting of Two Global Icons

The meeting was arranged at a hotel where Muhammad Ali was staying. Rafi had performed a concert in Chicago that day and, after finishing his show, travelled with his wife and young son, Shahid Rafi, to meet Ali.

When Ali arrived, the two legends warmly greeted each other. Their conversation reportedly lasted around 45 minutes, with the two men discussing their respective worlds of music and boxing.

According to the recollection of the meeting, Ali introduced the moment by acknowledging the stature of both men, saying that he was the great Muhammad Ali from America and Rafi was the great Mohammad Rafi from India.

The meeting also produced several memorable photographs. Ali reportedly suggested a playful pose in which he and Rafi appeared to face each other as though preparing for a boxing match. Ali also posed with Rafi’s family and presented the singer with a gift.

Shahid Rafi’s Excited Reaction

For the Rafi family, the encounter became a cherished memory. It is remembered as the only meeting between the legendary singer and the iconic boxer.

After the meeting, Rafi asked his young son Shahid how he had found the experience of meeting Ali. Excited by the encounter, Shahid reportedly replied:

“Fun is over, Abba. What a great person Muhammad Ali is!”

The meeting brought together two internationally celebrated personalities who had achieved greatness in very different fields. Mohammad Rafi was admired for his extraordinary contribution to Indian music, while Muhammad Ali was one of the most celebrated figures in boxing history.

Although their meeting lasted less than an hour, the encounter became a lasting memory for the Rafi family—and a fascinating meeting between two legends from India and the United States.
