Neha Kakkar Defends Indian Idol, Takes Dig at Sunidhi Chauhan Over ‘Scripted’ Reality Show Claims

The debate over whether Indian singing reality shows are genuinely “real” or partly scripted has resurfaced, with singers Neha Kakkar and Sunidhi Chauhan taking sharply different positions on the issue.

Neha Kakkar, who has previously served as a judge on Indian Idol, has rejected claims that the show and similar singing reality programmes are scripted. Speaking to the media recently, Neha defended the authenticity of contestants’ personal stories, struggles and emotions showcased on television.

Her response came after Sunidhi Chauhan, a former Indian Idol judge, criticised the current format of singing reality shows. Sunidhi has previously said that reality television has changed significantly from its early years and alleged that some elements—including contestant stories, performances and judges’ reactions—can be manipulated or edited for television.

Sunidhi had recalled her experience on reality shows and said she became uncomfortable when she felt that contestants were being promoted or praised according to instructions from the makers. Reacting to the criticism, Neha appeared to take a direct dig at Sunidhi without initially naming her. She said, “Angoor na mile toh khatte hain”, referring to the familiar expression that people tend to describe something as “sour” when they cannot have it.

Neha also insisted that Indian Idol is not scripted and argued that the emotions shown by contestants cannot simply be manufactured.

According to Neha, many contestants come from small towns and difficult backgrounds and have genuine stories of struggle. She said that if she becomes emotional while hearing a contestant’s story, that reaction is natural rather than something created for television.

Neha also made a bold claim about the show's popularity, saying that Indian Idol had its highest TRPs during the period when she was associated with it.

She suggested that the show's popularity declined after she stopped judging it. Neha was a judge on Indian Idol from Seasons 10 to 13.
