THE REPORT.

Washington: A Kenmore Air floatplane carrying 11 people burst into flames after making an emergency landing in waters off Sucia Island in Washington state on Thursday evening, leaving multiple injured.

What Happened:

 The de Havilland DHC-3 Otter single-engine floatplane took off from Lake Union, Seattle at around 4:30 p.m. and was headed to Roche Harbor.About 45 minutes later, at 5:15 p.m. local time, the pilot attempted an emergency landing in *Shallow Bay off Sucia Island, roughly 90 miles north of Seattle and 4 miles from the Canadian border.The plane caught fire after landing and was left burning just feet from the island’s rocky shoreline. 

Casualties & Rescue:

All 10 passengers and the pilot were accounted for.Four people were transported to hospitals* with serious injuries.injuries ranged from "head injuries to broken bones and lacerations".One person was in critical condition.Two injured were taken by the Coast Guard to Bellingham and two others to Orcas Island for evaluation.The US Coast Guard, US Navy, Canadian Coast Guard, and local agencies launched multiple assets for the rescue. 

Company Response:

Kenmore Air CEO David Gudgel confirmed the aircraft belonged to the company."We are grateful that everyone aboard has been accounted for, and our immediate focus is ensuring our passengers and pilot receive the care and support they need"The airline said it is fully cooperating with investigating authorities. Kenmore Air has cancelled all flights on July 24, 2026. 

Investigation:

The cause of the emergency landing is still unknown. The NTSB and FAA are expected to investigate. Environmental response teams are also assessing potential impacts.
