Elon Musk Says He Will Give One SpaceX Share To Every Kid In America Next Year

WASHINGTON / NEW YORK: Billionaire Elon Musk on Monday pledged to give one share of his company SpaceX to “every kid in America” next year.

In a post on X early Monday, Musk wrote:“Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America. This will be the first of many.”_

The Math:

SpaceX shares closed at $146.03 on Friday, Oct 16.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are roughly 72-73 million children under the age of 18 in the United States.

Giving one share to each child would be worth about $10.5 to $10.7 billion.

Musk owns / has voting power over about 6.4 billion SpaceX shares, or about 48.4% of the company, according to an August SEC filing. The giveaway represents just over 1% of his stake.

What We Know / Don’t Know:

Musk gave no details on how the shares would be distributed, whether parents would need to complete formalities, or who exactly would be eligible.

SpaceX has not issued any official statement on the pledge so far. USA Today and other outlets said they have reached out to SpaceX for comment.

SpaceX only began trading publicly in June 2026 after the biggest IPO in history, making Musk the world’s first trillionaire.

SpaceX stock was up about 2-2.7% in early trading Monday to around $149.96, even as the broader Nasdaq had fallen last week.

Why He Announced It:

The pledge came a day after AI company Anthropic announced on Sunday it will commit 5% of its shares to a new “public benefit” fund to balance financial success with social impact.

In response, Musk wrote: “I recommend giving the shares directly to the public.”

Then hours later: “This is what I will be doing.”

The announcements come amid growing public wariness about AI. A new AP-NORC poll finds 64% of Americans think AI is developing “too fast.”
