Modi-Trump Hold Phone Talks, Discuss Trade, Defence and Energy Ties
New Delhi, September 30, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump on Wednesday, with the two leaders reviewing bilateral cooperation in trade, defence, energy, critical technologies and other areas of mutual interest.
PM Modi described the conversation as “productive” and said both sides agreed to maintain close engagement to further advance the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. The leaders also exchanged views on regional and international developments, including ongoing efforts to promote global peace and security.
Trade Talks Remain Important
The phone call comes as India and the US continue negotiations on a proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is currently in the United States for G20 trade ministers’ meetings and discussions with US officials on advancing an interim trade arrangement.
Trade negotiations have also been taking place amid disagreements over US tariff measures connected to India’s purchases of Russian energy.
Defence, Energy and Technology
The two leaders also reviewed cooperation in defence and energy, along with critical and emerging technologies. Both sides have identified these sectors as important components of the broader strategic partnership.
Modi and Trump agreed to remain in close contact as India and the US work to deepen cooperation across these areas.
