Penguin India Denies External Pressure Over Sonia Gandhi Memoir

Penguin Random House India has denied allegations that external pressure influenced its decision not to publish Congress leader Sonia Gandhi’s memoir, Belonging: A Journey of Love, in India.

The publisher said discussions during the normal editorial process reached an “impasse over a particular issue” and that the matter could not be resolved with the author’s representatives. The publisher declined to disclose details, citing confidentiality obligations. 

The clarification comes amid a political controversy over the memoir. Congress leaders have alleged that the publisher sought changes to certain passages, while Penguin has maintained that the decision was based on the unresolved editorial issue and not outside pressure

The memoir, titled Belonging: A Journey of Love, is scheduled for international publication, with the dispute over its Indian publication continuing to attract political attention.
