Senator Elizabeth Warren On X: Musk Poured Half Billion Into Nov 3 Midterms To Shield Influence; ‘But This Is A Democracy, Power Belongs To People’ Critics Warn Wealth Buying Power
WASHINGTON:US Senator Elizabeth Warren has criticised billionaire Elon Musk over his reported spending of half a billion dollars on the November 2026 midterm elections, accusing him of using his wealth to protect his political influence.
In a post on X, Warren said Musk had poured $500 million into the midterm elections “to protect his power”, warning that the country’s democratic institutions should not be controlled by wealthy individuals.
“But this is a democracy. Power belongs to the people, not one trillionaire trying to buy Congress,” Warren said.
*What Spending Shows:
According to FEC filings and AP/Reuters tally cited Oct 23: Musk gave $445 million+ to Republican candidates and causes this year — single biggest disclosed donor in 2026 midterms and biggest single donor in a midterm cycle ever.
$77M to America PAC in first two weeks of Oct, group spent $43M same period on voter outreach, digital ads, phone/text, mailers, had $46.5M cash left.
$158M to Senate Leadership Fund (principal GOP Senate super PAC), which transferred to Texas PAC backing Republican Ken Paxton vs Democrat James Talarico.
Since July alone $276M+, per Associated Press Oct report. For context: $288M in all of 2024 for Trump + GOP.
Others joining: Uline founders Elizabeth and Richard Uihlein $124M for Restoration of America PAC, Citadel Ken Griffin $40M+, Blackstone Steve Schwarzman & wife Christine $32M, Diane Hendricks $25M to MAGA Inc., Marc Andreessen & Ben Horowitz major to MAGA Inc.
Washington Post: total Republican-leaning mega-donors $1.7B this cycle vs Democratic-leaning $832M. Brennan Center analysis Oct 27: 40 biggest donors contributed nearly $2.5B through mid-Oct.
Warren Context:
Senator from Massachusetts has targeted Musk since 2024 proposed SEER Act to bar corporate leaders >$1B from influencing federal agencies tied to their businesses (SpaceX, Tesla federal contracts), called him “co-president.” This week also questioned Meta’s R&D tax credits ($700M in 2023 to $4B in 2025) and wrote letter on X Money stablecoin risks.
Post comes as Corporate America on alert midterms Nov 3 may flip Congress, bring tougher scrutiny on corporate power, AI industry, electricity bills, healthcare, housing.
Musk Reply / GOP Defence:
On X last week, Musk agreed with post that “Democrats must lose.” Author Arthur Herman (Jammin 99.9): Musk realises keeping GOP majority crucial for America’s secure prosperous future, not fear of investigations by Dem-controlled Congress.
GOP groups say spending helps communicate with voters, compete in key races Senate control is coin flip, path runs through Trump country.
Broader Debate:Supporters argue political donations protected expression (free speech), critics warn enormous contributions give wealthy individuals greater influence. Wisconsin Supreme Court Apr 2025 example Musk-backed candidate lost despite $21M spending shows money doesn’t guarantee win but changes resources.
