"Supriya Sule Rules Out NDA Joining, But Hints At Support If 50% Seat Hike Condition Met".
New Delhi - With the *Monsoon Session of Parliament 2026* beginning on July 20, the BJP-led NDA government is making a last-ditch effort to secure a two-thirds majority to pass key constitutional amendment bills.
WHAT'S AT STAKE:
The government plans to revive two major bills that failed in April:
Delimitation Bill / 131st Amendment: To fast-track women's reservation by expanding Lok Sabha seats from 543 to up to 850 based on 2011 census
Constitution Amendment Bill: Automatic removal of ministers, including PM, if under arrest for 30 consecutive days .
A constitutional amendment needs two-thirds majority in both Houses.
THE NUMBERS GAME:
Current NDA strength in Lok Sabha: 292 MPs. Still short by 31 votes.
Rajya Sabha: NDA has ∼150 MPs. Needs 162-164 for special majority.
To bridge the gap, the BJP is reportedly reaching out to NCP(SP) and DMK.
NCP(SP)j STAND:.
Supriya Sule ruled out joining NDA, calling such talks "baseless".
-But hinted NCP(SP) may support the Delimitation Bill if government puts 50% seat increase condition in writing.
NCP(SP) has 8 Lok Sabha MPs and 1 Rajya Sabha MP, making it important for the numbers .
DMK FACTOR.
DMK has 22 Lok Sabha MPs and 8 Rajya Sabha MPs
DMK has historically opposed delimitation fearing loss of South India's representation
Congress leader P Chidambaram alleged BJP is "wooing" NCP(SP) and DMK for the bill and urged both parties not to support it .
OTHER DEVELOPMENTS:
TMC split: Around 20 TMC MPs have formed a separate group and may support NDA. This could take NDA to 313 in Lok Sabha
Late-night meetings: NCP(SP) leader Jayant Patil and NCP Ajit faction leaders met CM Devendra Fadnavis, fueling merger speculation.
Rajya Sabha bypolls: 3 former TMC MPs who joined BJP are contesting, which could push NDA to 162 .
OPPOSITION RESPONSE:
Opposition is preparing to corner the government over Ram temple donation theft and MP land deals controversies. They hope to block the amendments again as in April.
The NDA still doesn't have two-thirds on its own. Every vote, defection, and abstention in the Monsoon Session will decide the fate of these bills. Support or even absence of NCP(SP) and DMK could be crucial.
