Delhi Court Sends Swatantra Bhardwaj to 14-Day Judicial Custody in Jantar Mantar Assault Case

NEW DELHI, September 7, 2026: A Delhi court on Monday remanded Hindutva influencer Swatantra Bhardwaj to 14 days of judicial custody in connection with the alleged assault on the father of a student activist during a protest at Jantar Mantar. He is scheduled to be produced before the court again on September 21.

Bhardwaj was detained in Bulandshahr on Friday, shortly after supporters of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) staged a protest outside the Parliament Street police station demanding action against him. He had earlier been placed in one-day police custody for questioning.

The case gained renewed attention after a video podcast in which Bhardwaj allegedly claimed that he had assaulted the student activist’s father during the June 23 protest. He also allegedly referred to having political connections. Bhardwaj has subsequently claimed that he acted in self-defence.

Police have added provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and criminal intimidation to the case. A separate FIR under the POCSO Act was also registered following allegations of online threats and harassment targeting the minor student activist.

Delhi Police have previously disputed some claims surrounding the alleged assault, saying the victim’s injuries were simple in nature and that there was no medical confirmation of a skull fracture. The investigation and the allegations remain subject to legal proceedings.
