Ahmedabad School Fined ₹10,000 Over Library Books, Malala Memoir at Centre of Controversy

An Ahmedabad school has been fined ₹10,000 following an inquiry into concerns raised over books available in its library, including Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai’s memoir I Am Malala.

Anand Niketan School was asked to provide clarification and assurances regarding the material accessible to students after objections were raised by some quarters. The controversy also included concerns over prayer-related practices at the school.

Education authorities subsequently sought explanations from the school regarding its library collection and other practices. Reports said the authorities imposed the ₹10,000 fine after conducting an inquiry.

Malala Yousafzai was shot by the Taliban in Pakistan in 2012 for advocating girls’ education. She later became the youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Her memoir describes her childhood, her family’s support for education and her campaign for girls’ right to attend school.

The action against the Ahmedabad school has triggered a broader debate over the choice of books in school libraries and the kind of educational material that should be accessible to children. It has also raised questions over whether a memoir centred on the struggle for girls’ education should become a subject of controversy within an educational institution.
