Nepal Flood Disaster: Death Toll Climbs to 579, Nearly 2,000 Still Missing

A devastating flash flood that struck Nepal’s Himalayan border region on Wednesday has caused widespread destruction, with the death toll rising to 579 and 1,924 people still reported missing, according to the latest updates from Nepalese authorities.

The powerful surge of water, mud and debris swept through towns, markets, villages and critical infrastructure along the Nepal-China border. The disaster was triggered after a glacier collapse and subsequent flooding in the Himalayan river system, leaving a trail of destruction across the region.

The scale of the flooding was so severe that bodies were carried downstream into northern India. Authorities in Uttar Pradesh have reported recovering bodies from rivers flowing down from Nepal.

Nepal Army personnel and other security forces have been deployed extensively for search-and-rescue operations. More than 3,700 people have been rescued so far, while rescue teams continue to search through thick layers of mud and debris for survivors.

Nepal Army Chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel has indicated that assessing the full extent of the disaster and damage could take several days. Meanwhile, questions remain over the extent to which Nepal will accept foreign search-and-rescue assistance. Reports say several countries, including India, have offered assistance, while Nepal has so far said it does not require foreign rescue teams, though technical support remains possible.

The disaster has also raised fresh concerns about the growing risks posed by unstable glaciers, glacial lakes and extreme weather events in the Himalayan region.
