LNG Tanker Comes Under Fire Off Yemen Coast, Armed Guards Fire Warning Shots
Al Mukalla, Yemen, October 17, 2026: An liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker came under fire from a small boat off the coast of Yemen, prompting the vessel’s armed security team to fire warning shots, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
The incident was reported approximately 140 nautical miles (259 kilometres) southwest of Al Mukalla, Yemen, on Saturday. According to UKMTO, the tanker’s master reported that a small skiff carrying seven people approached the vessel and fired two shots at it. The tanker’s armed security personnel responded by firing two warning shots at the approaching craft, forcing it to change course.
Authorities Investigate the Incident
UKMTO confirmed that authorities were investigating the incident. Further details about the identity of the people aboard the skiff, their motive and whether the tanker sustained any damage were not immediately available.
The maritime security agency urged vessels operating in the area to remain vigilant, exercise caution and report suspicious activity.
Maritime Security Concerns Near Yemen
The incident comes amid heightened security concerns affecting commercial shipping routes around Yemen and the Gulf of Aden, a strategically important maritime corridor connecting the Arabian Sea with the Red Sea.
The region has experienced repeated security incidents involving commercial vessels, raising concerns over the safety of international shipping and the movement of energy supplies.
LNG tankers transport liquefied natural gas across international markets, making their safe passage important for global energy trade. Any security threat to these vessels can increase operational risks for shipping companies and crews.
What Happens Next?
Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the approach and gunfire. It remains unclear whether the incident was an attempted robbery, a deliberate attack or another form of maritime security threat.
For now, UKMTO has advised ships transiting the area to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity as the investigation continues.
